Introduction - Purpose EndOfThisWorld is a non-commercial project to create a surreal novel beginning on a regular Monday and ending with a global catastrophe. The novel will be written by the users of the endofthisworld.com website. The story will be shaped interactively, chapter-by-chapter, in a creative environment. EndOfThisWorld consists of 25 Chapters that progress by means of an election system. Creating the chapters is entirely left to the community, subject to the requirement that Chapter 25 sees the end of the world. Acceptance of Terms These Terms & Conditions apply to all visitors and users of the EndOfThisWorld website, including members who contribute their submissions for the story and other materials or services to the website. You affirm that you are either more than 18 years of age, or an emancipated minor, or possess legal parental or guardian consent, and are fully able and competent to enter into the terms, conditions, obligations, affirmations, representations, and warranties set forth in these Terms & Conditions, and to abide by and comply with these Terms & Conditions. In any case, you affirm that you are over the age of 13, as the EndOfThisWorld website is not intended for children under 13. Children under the age of 13 are not permitted to use EndOfThisWorld and no part of the website is directed to children under the age of 13. If you are under the age of 13 please do not use this website. By visiting and using the EndOfThisWorld website you signify your assent to both these Terms & Conditions and the EndOfThisWorld Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with any of these terms you are not permitted to visit the website and the contents of EndOfThisWorld or share any information with us. User Accounts & Submissions In order to access some features of the website, you will have to create an account. You may never use another's account without permission. When creating your account, you must provide accurate and complete information. You are solely responsible for the activity that occurs on your account, and you must keep your account password secure. You must notify EndOfThisWorld immediately of any breach of security or unauthorized use of your account. Although EndOfThisWorld will not be liable for your losses caused by any unauthorized use of your account, you may be liable for the losses of EndOfThisWorld or others due to such unauthorized use. You shall be solely responsible for your own user submissions and the consequences of posting or publishing them. In connection with user submissions, you affirm, represent and warrant that you own or have all the necessary licences, copyrights, consents, and permissions to use and authorize EndOfThisWorld to use any text or other material that you submit in the manner contemplated by the website and these Terms & Conditions. For clarity, you retain all of your ownership rights in your user submissions. However, by submitting any text or other material to EndOfThisWorld, you hereby grant EndOfThisWorld a worldwide, exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenceable and transferable licence to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the user submissions in connection with the EndOfThisWorld project. You agree not to use or launch any automated system, including without limitation, "robots," "spiders," "offline readers," etc., that accesses the website in a manner that sends more request messages to the EndOfThisWorld servers in a given period of time than a human can reasonably produce in the same period by using a convention on-line web browser. Notwithstanding the foregoing, EndOfThisWorld grants the operators of public search engines permission to use spiders to copy materials from the site for the sole purpose of creating publicly available searchable indices of the materials, but not caches or archives of such materials. EndOfThisWorld reserves the right to revoke these exceptions either generally or in specific cases. You agree not to collect or harvest any personally identifiable information, including account names, from the website, nor to use the communication systems provided by the website for any commercial solicitation purposes. You agree not to solicit, for commercial purposes, any users of the website with respect to their user submissions. The Process EndOfThisWorld uses instant-runoff voting (IRV) as its voting system. During the Voting Period, voters rank the candidate Chapters in order of preference (1 to 5). If no candidate receives majority of first choices (i.e. above 50%), the least voted candidate is eliminated and its votes are redistributed to the remaining ones, according to the received rankings. This process is repeated until the leading candidate achieves majority. Chapters advance on a two-period cycle. During the so-called Submission Period, members can submit candidate scripts for the current chapter. Then, during the Voting Period, the community votes to select the best one, which is incorporated into the official plot. In order to avoid having members vote among an unrealistically large number of candidates, we have established a pre-selection process, which we call Rating, that is used to nominate five finalists for each Chapter's election. Rating runs in parallel with the submission period. When a writer submits a candidate Chapter, the Chapter becomes immediately available for viewing by members of the community. Whoever reads the Chapter has the option to assign a score ranging from 1 to 5, according to how much they liked the Chapter. We will nominate the Chapters that receive the highest scores, but reserve the right to exercise discretion in cases where more than five submissions receive high ratings, or an exceptionally good candidate was submitted late in the Submission Period. Final Outcome Once all 25 chapters have been completed a unique, distinct and complete new story will have been created. In the event that a plan for a feature film, an animation, a comic book or other form of expression is decided, all 25 authors will be rewarded with accreditation and a percentage of eventual profits. Any such action will be organized and implemented by the Editing Team and in coordination with a all 25 authors. Intellectual Property You expressly agree that you will not: (i) submit material that is protected by copyright or otherwise subject to third party proprietary rights, including privacy and publicity rights, unless you are the owner of such rights or have permission from their rightful owner to post the material and to grant EndOfThisWorld all of the licence rights granted herein; (ii) publish falsehoods or misrepresentations that could damage EndOfThisWorld or any third party; (iii) submit material that is unlawful, obscene, defamatory, libelous, threatening, pornographic, harassing, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive, or encourages conduct that would be considered a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability, violate any law, or is otherwise inappropriate; (iv) post advertisements or solicitations of business: (v) impersonate another person. EndOfThisWorld does not endorse any user submission or any opinion, recommendation, or advice expressed therein, and EndOfThisWorld expressly disclaims any and all liability in connection with user submissions. You hereby grant EndOfThisWorld a worldwide, exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenceable and transferable licence to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the user submissions in connection with the EndOfThisWorld project. Copyright Infringement EndOfThisWorld does not permit copyright infringing activities and infringement of intellectual property rights on its website, and EndOfThisWorld will remove all content and user submissions if properly notified that such content or user submission infringes on another's intellectual property rights. EndOfThisWorld reserves the right to remove content and user submissions without prior notice. EndOfThisWorld will also terminate a user's access to its website, if they are determined to be a repeat infringer. A repeat infringer is a user who has been notified of infringing activity more than twice and/or has had a user submission removed from the website more than twice. EndOfThisWorld also reserves the right to decide whether content or a user submission is appropriate and complies with these Terms & Conditions for violations other than copyright infringement and violations of intellectual property law, such as, but not limited to, pornography, obscene or defamatory material, or excessive length. EndOfThisWorld may remove such user submissions and/or terminate a user's access for uploading such material in violation of these Terms & Conditions at any time, without prior notice and at its sole discretion. Warranty Disclaimer You agree that your use of the EndOfThisWorld website shall be at your sole risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law, EndOfThisWorld disclaims all warranties, express or implied, in connection with the website and your use thereof.
