Join us on November 6 at the University of California at Irvine for the Future of Writing conference, exploring the influence of new communications technologies on collaborative writing!

Check out this cool article on the bbc. People are worried that a particle-physics experiment about to go online at CERN will create mini black holes that will swallow the Earth. The same article goes on to present a list of popular end-of-world concepts, which includes
- Destruction of planet, extinction of human race, significant change in situation of human race
- Secular scenarios:climate change, asteroid or comet strike, nuclear war, destabilization of earth or moon orbit
- Religious scenarios: Islam refers to "last judgement", some Buddhists believe in disappearance of Buddha's teachings, Christian end of world linked to second coming of Jesus, Hindus believe in cycle of ages
Zoroastrians may have had first codified end of world theory.
It'll be interesting to see whether or not our novel will follow one of these popular scenarios.
Thanks to today's mapping technology, Red's route from the collision scene at Fairfax and Olympic to the Cedars-Sinai Medical center becomes ever more vivid:
The results of the Chapter 4 vote are out! Congratulations to the_tremelman for winning a tight race with his story Slowly Rolls the Tide!
The pieces of the plot are gradually coming together, since we now know that Red, who is actually Lana's brother, is carrying in his truck a mysterious cargo of medical supplies across the border from Mexico, when he witnesses the collision between Star and the woman in the Porsche in L.A. But what is Nathaniel doing?
The submission period for Chapter 5 is now underway. As we're going through the summer, we decided to allow extra time for submissions. So, the current submission period will close on Tuesday, September 30.
... is now over. The results will be out very soon!
If you like EndOfThisWorld's voting-based approach to writing, then be sure to check out Rootclip.com; a really cool website for collaborative movie projects. At Rootclip you can enter a movie contest, which starts with an initial video clip made by the project creators, and then advances chapter-by-chapter through a sequence of one-minute movie submissions by the site's members, followed by voting.
Does this process sound familiar?! It's great to find out that other projects on the web are using community decision making for collaborative creative works.
A confused doctor in Berlin is uneased by the fact that the clocks are ticking backwards. A suspicious load of medical supplies arrives from Tijuana aboard Red's truck. A german shepard wakes up his master from a nightmare of desolation. Lana and Star become friends amidst a communication breakdown in L.A. An ordinary night shift in a park turns into a close encounter with a pack of wolves...
...is just a sample of what takes place in the five top-ranked submissions for Chapter 4:
- The Smiling Man, by The Outsider,
- Time Is Running Out..., by LysInTheSky,
- Slowly Rolls the Tide, by the_tremelman,
- When Nothing Works, by NatashaLP,
- Animal Instinct, by neotupac.
Vote now for your favorite ones, and help decide the fourth Chapter of EndOfThisWorld! Voting will last until Saturday, August 2.
